APM Terminals Expands Tanger Med Port with $800 Million Investment

In order to support the continuous development of the port complex, APM Terminals announces the launch of the second phase of the development of APM Terminals MedPort Tanger (Terminal 4). Ultimately, one million TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) containers can be stored there, with a quay that will increase from 1200 to 1600 meters in length.

"This new investment is an important step in the long-term partnership between Morocco and Maersk and confirms our commitment to establishing a major transshipment hub in the Mediterranean," said APM Terminals in a press release. With the work on this second phase, which requires a total investment of $800 million, the quay will be extended by 400 meters, reaching 1600 meters, with an increase in the terminal’s capacity of an additional one million TEU containers, bringing the previously announced total capacity to 5 million.

The second container transshipment terminal established by APM Terminals in the Tanger Med port complex, alongside APM Terminals Tanger (Port Tanger Med I), APM Terminals MedPort Tanger, which began operations in 2007, is considered one of the most technologically advanced APM Terminals terminals on the continent, and the first automated container terminal in Africa. More than 2.2 million TEU containers were handled by APM Terminals MedPort Tanger in 2020, reaching over 30 crane movements per hour.

Far ahead of the port of Algeciras, Spain, the Tanger Med port complex became the largest container port in the Mediterranean by the end of 2020, with a total of 5,771,221 TEU containers handled.
