Tanger Med Port Complex Breaks Records with 8.1 Million Container Throughput

At the end of 2021, the Tanger Med group, which manages the Tanger Med port complex, posted a gross turnover of 8.044 billion dirhams, a strong increase.
This growth was made possible by the performance recorded by Tanger Med, the leading port in the Mediterranean and Africa, and the group’s involvement in the operations of 9 other ports in the Kingdom through its reference participation in "Marsa Maroc".
According to the figures, the total volume handled by the port hub is 138 million tons of goods and 8.1 million TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) containers, of which 7.2 million TEU containers for the Tanger Med port complex alone, which earned it the status of the leading port in the Mediterranean and Africa and the 23rd worldwide. Soon the top 20?
For its part, Marsa Maroc, the national leader in the management of port terminals, in which Tanger Med acquired a strategic 35% stake from the State in July 2021, handled 1.9 million TEU containers in 2021 in the various ports of the Kingdom where it operates, including 1 million TEU containers at the TC3 terminal of the Tanger Med 2 port.
As for TIR (International Road Transport) traffic, it recorded a 14% increase compared to 2020 with more than 407,000 trucks, while the traffic of new vehicles reached 429,509 vehicles, an increase of 20% compared to the previous year. In total, the entire business volume generated by the Tanger Med activity zones (Tanger Free Zone, Tanger Automotive City, etc.) reaches 92 billion dirhams.
