Tanger Med Port Climbs to 23rd Largest Globally, Eyes Top 20 Ranking

For the past 5 years, the Tanger Med port has been the largest port in Africa and for the past two years, the largest in the Mediterranean. It now ranks 23rd among the world’s largest ports, gaining one place compared to the previous global top.
With over 7.1 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) handled in 2021, the Tanger Med port has moved up to 23rd place in the ranking of the world’s largest container ports established this week by Alphaliner, a platform specialized in maritime trade. From 48th place globally to 23rd, the Tangier port complex is on its way to achieving its goal of entering the top 20 largest container ports in the world.
In an article devoted to the state of the port world in 2021, the Merchant Navy newspaper also highlighted the performance records of the Tanger Med port: "In the Mediterranean, the extremely rapid rise (+49% in the last two years) of Tanger Med is disconcerting. Queen of transshipment, with 7.17 million TEUs, the first Moroccan gateway has dethroned its Spanish neighbor across the Strait of Gibraltar, Valencia (5.61 million TEUs, +3.4%)."
With a total of 47 million TEUs handled in 2021, Shanghai tops this ranking, dominated by Chinese ports, followed by Singapore (2nd, with 37 million TEUs).
