Record Freight Traffic Surge Between Algeciras and Tanger Med Ports

Freight traffic between the port of Algeciras and the port of Tanger Med recorded a record level of activity in May 2022, with a total of 9.7 million tons of total traffic (+7.5%) and 407,000 TEUs (+5.5%).
Freight traffic between the two shores of the strait recorded a flow of more than 44,000 trucks for the month of May alone on the Algeciras-Tanger Med line (+16.2%). This is a "positive development", notes Gerardo Landaluce, the president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), stressing that this trend has been observed across all traffic and that it is necessary to maintain the competitiveness of the ports by strengthening the control staff and modernizing the infrastructure.

During the period, total traffic reached 45 million tons (+5.5%). In detail, container traffic is around 2 million TEUs (+0.9%), liquid bulk, 11.8 million tons (+5.7%) and solid, 661,725 tons (+127.7%), and ro-ro traffic exceeded 200,000 trucks (+7.9%) between the ports of Algeciras and Tanger Med.
After the reopening of the borders with Morocco on May 17, passenger traffic also increased during this month, with 137,000 passengers and more than 26,000 vehicles embarking from Algeciras to Tanger Med and from Tarifa to Tanger Ville.
