Moroccan Port Tanger-Med Surpasses Spanish Rivals in Container Traffic Growth

The port of Tanger-Med, a geostrategic port for freight traffic, is in full expansion, far outpacing its most direct competitors in Spain, the ports of Algeciras and Valencia.
At the end of 2022, the port of Tanger-Med achieved a container traffic of 7.59 million TEUs (+ 6% compared to 2021), compared to just over 4.67 million for the port of Valencia, down 9.5% compared to the previous year. The saturation of the terminals in this port and the rush of shipping companies to ports where labor is cheaper are to blame, explains Levante.
According to the Valencia Port Authority (APV), the global economic crisis has affected the port of Valencia, leading to a decrease in the number of containers entering and leaving Valencia. But the biggest drop concerns transit containers, with traffic down 14% during this period.
The port of Algeciras, for its part, closed the year 2022 with a total traffic of 108.2 million tons, up 3% from 2021. For the seventh consecutive year, the activity of this port has exceeded the 100 million ton mark. Its container traffic, meanwhile, exceeded 4.7 million units, down 0.7% compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, the total freight traffic is 107.8 million tons for Tanger-Med (+ 6%) compared to 108.1 million tons for Algeciras (+ 3%) and nearly 80 million tons for the port of Valencia.
