Morocco Expands Port Strategy with Tanger Med as Model for African Trade Hub

Morocco is pursuing its port strategy for 2030 with Tanger Med as a reference. The kingdom has embarked on a policy of developing modern and competitive ports.
The success of the Tanger Med port has prompted Morocco to invest in other large-scale port and logistics development projects. Speaking at the "TOC Africa" held in Tangier last week, Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohammed Abdeljalil, said that Morocco "has developed an ambitious port strategy for 2030 for the development of the kingdom’s ports and is paving the way for the participation of various public and private sector players".
The Tanger Med port complex, inaugurated in 2007, is a testament to Morocco’s expertise in the matter, says Abdeljalil, stressing that the success of this project has led to new investments, leading to the creation of the ports of Nador and Dakhla, currently under completion. Launched with a single container terminal, Tanger Med now has four and collaborates with the most important companies in the sector, such as APM Terminals, the CMA CGM Group, Eurogate, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk and Marsa Maroc, the port management company of the kingdom, reports El Estrecho Digital.
In 2021, Tanger Med became the largest container port in the Mediterranean, a position it maintained in 2022 with a total traffic of 7.6 million TEUs, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year. "In addition to being the main port platform in the Mediterranean as well as in Africa, Tanger Med is positioning itself as an integrated industrial-port platform at the service of the logistical competitiveness of our continent," said Fouad Brini, Chairman of the Tanger Med Group.
