Tanger Med Port Surges in Global Rankings with 35% Container Growth

More good news from the Tanger Med port complex, which continues to multiply performances to improve its position in the small circle of leading ports in the world. In the 1st quarter of 2021, it achieved a turnover of 739 million dirhams, up 18% compared to last year.
The 24th best container port in the world, according to Alphaliner, the maritime trade journal, Tanger Med recorded a record figure of 1.8 million TEU containers handled during the first quarter of this year, an increase of 35% compared to the same period in 2020.
The document states that the investments made at the end of March amount to 387 million dirhams, of which 302 million dirhams relate to infrastructure, road, various network and IT infrastructure projects. For its part, the consolidated debt reached 10.7 billion dirhams, of which 3.1 billion dirhams for TMPA (Tanger Med Port Authority) and 7.6 billion dirhams for Tanger Med 2, recording a decrease of 1% compared to December 2020.
Furthermore, the estimated turnover for the year 2021 of the Mediterranean port is 500 million dirhams (about 55 million $) for Tanger Med 1, an increase of 3% compared to 2020.
This feat leads Jeune Afrique to affirm that "Tanger Med is realizing the Moroccan ambition to become the Mediterranean champion of the sector, ahead of the Spanish Valencia".
