Tanger Med Port Sets Record Container Traffic, Surges 20% in 2020

In the fourth quarter of 2020, the activity of the Tanger Med port hub resulted in an increase in the main indicators of port activity. For the year 2020 in general, the results are remarkable.
At the end of December 2020, 5.77 million TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) containers were handled, an increase of 20% compared to 2019, and 1.3 million TEU containers were loaded during the 4th quarter of 2020, an increase of 25% compared to 2019, a record for Mediterranean ports.
Moreover, in 2020, the bar of more than 500,000 TEU containers handled per month was exceeded 5 times, not to mention the peak reached during the month of November of 553,164 containers processed. Similarly, at the end of December 2020, with regard to TIR truck traffic, 357,331 units were processed, approximately the same as in 2019, and 103,684 units during the 4th quarter of 2020, an increase of 9% compared to 2019.
Financially, the turnover recorded in 2020 by the port hub increased by 1% compared to 2019, from 2.389 billion dirhams to 2.418 billion dirhams. For the fourth quarter of 2020, the turnover reached 649 million dirhams, the same level as the fourth quarter of 2019.
