Tanger Med on the brink of asphyxiation: the giant extension becomes an absolute emergency

The maneuvers have begun in the greatest secrecy. A restricted call for tenders is already circulating to appoint the company capable of carrying out this titanic project, report the Inspirations eco. The urgency is such that consultations are underway with carefully selected partners, including the French giant Bouygues, recently spotted in Morocco to position itself on this strategic market.

This haste is explained by figures that make you dizzy. In 2024, the port handled 10.2 million containers, recording a spectacular jump of 18.8%. A performance that places Tanger Med in the world’s top 20 but pushes it to its limits. Without this vital extension, the platform risks total congestion as early as next year.

The challenge now is to know where to lay the new foundations. Two options are on the table: an extension to the East, towards the Ksar Sghir naval base, or a breakthrough to the West, between Oued Alian and Malabata.

If the project is completed quickly, Morocco could change in scale. According to experts, such additional capacity would have already allowed the Kingdom to compete with the ports of Los Angeles or Rotterdam, joining the very exclusive circle of the nine largest maritime powers on the planet.
