Morocco’s Port Revolution: A New Automotive Powerhouse Emerges

The Nador West Med port complex will become operational in late 2026 or early 2027. This new port, due to its strategic location on the Strait of Gibraltar and its capacity to accommodate large vessels, positions itself as a real challenger to the ports of Algeciras, considered a gateway to Europe from Africa, and Valencia, in Spain. Its initial capacity is estimated at 3.5 million containers per year. This capacity can reach 5.5 million containers, approaching the 4.7 million containers handled by the port of Algeciras in 2024.

The future "Nador West Med" port also includes a free industrial zone of 8,000 hectares, with an integrated energy platform including fuel and coal stations, and a project for a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal connected to the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline. It is designed to complement Tanger Med, which reached a total of 10.2 million containers and 140 million tons of goods in 2024.

Supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with more than 300 million euros, Nador West Med represents a real threat to the Spanish ports in the western Mediterranean. This raises a strategic debate: how to support the development of Mediterranean partners without weakening European industrial sectors? This support is interpreted as an indirect support to a competitor of the Spanish ports. "Reports already mention the possibility that some models currently assembled in Spanish factories may be relocated to Morocco, where production costs remain more competitive." Such relocations will negatively impact the sector in Spain: loss of activity, jobs and added value.
