Suspect in Assault Case Dies in Police Custody After Claiming Poison Ingestion

Placed in police custody, an individual, prosecuted for his alleged involvement in a case of assault with a bladed weapon, died on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the provincial hospital in Settat.
The judicial police placed the suspect in custody, on the orders of the competent prosecutor’s office, at the disposal of the investigation for his involvement in a case of assault with a bladed weapon, due to neighborhood conflicts, according to a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
According to the same source, the accused claimed, during his custody, that he had ingested a rodenticide before his arrest, believing that the victim had died. He was urgently admitted to the provincial hospital in Settat to receive the necessary care. However, he did not survive. His body was deposited at the morgue for an autopsy, the DGSN said.
Subsequently, the prefectural judicial police service in Settat opened an investigation. Several co-detainees, also placed in custody, to whom the suspect confided having taken the toxic substance, were heard and scientific investigations and expert assessments were carried out.
