Suspect Dies in Police Custody at Beni Mellal Hospital After Drug-Related Arrest

An individual placed under medical supervision at the provincial hospital of Beni Mellal died on Sunday, May 3, according to the Beni Mellal police prefecture.
The defendant, who had numerous criminal records, was arrested on Saturday evening by the police patrols "in flagrante delicto of possession of bladed weapons and under the influence of drugs," says a press release from the General Directorate of National Security relayed by the MAP. The public prosecutor thus ordered that he be placed in custody, pending clarification of the facts charged against him.
But, taken ill during his custody, he was taken on Sunday to the hospital for a health check-up and necessary care. Then, he returns to custody and has a more serious relapse than the first one. He was taken back to the hospital, this time under medical supervision, in the intensive care unit where he died.
His body was transferred to the hospital morgue for an autopsy in order "to determine the causes of death. A judicial investigation has been opened by the provincial judicial police service in order to determine the ins and outs of this case".
