A new strategic highway at the heart of Morocco

The Drâa-Tafilalet Regional Council approved, during its session on July 1st, the creation of the region’s first highway. This major project, costing 9.5 billion dirhams, is intended to connect Midelt and Khénifra.
This strategic decision aims to strengthen the infrastructure and improve the connection between Drâa-Tafilalet and the neighboring regions, such as Béni Mellal-Khénifra. This axis is expected to reduce travel time, improve road safety, and enhance economic attractiveness.
The route, which is over 90 kilometers long, will comply with modern standards while taking into account the geographical difficulties. For the President of the Regional Council, this project "represents a qualitative leap in the region’s connection to the national road network." The Council is "determined to advance infrastructure in the different provinces of the region, in order to lift isolation and achieve territorial justice," he added.
The project has received broad consensus within the Council, where it is seen as an essential lever for the opening up of several rural municipalities and for the revitalization of mountain tourism. The construction will be carried out through partnerships involving government sectors and public and private institutions.
In terms of the timeline, the technical and environmental studies will begin in the coming months. The file will then be submitted to the competent ministries to validate the financing and oversee the implementation. The start of the work is scheduled for the year 2026.
