Morocco's Ambitious Road Expansion: 300km of Expressways Under Construction, 900km More Planned

Nizar Baraka, the Minister of Equipment and Water, stated on Monday at the House of Representatives that approximately 300 kilometers of expressways are currently under construction in Morocco and that nearly 900 additional kilometers are planned as part of various projects.

Among these projects are the Tiznit-Dakhla, Fès-Taounate via National Road No. 8, and Tétouan–Chefchaouen via National Road No. 2 expressways, as well as the connection to the Nador West Med port. Nizar Baraka also mentioned the northeast bypass of Agadir, the Agadir urban highway, the widening to 3x3 of National Road No. 6 between Dar Sekka and Sidi Allal El Bahraoui, and the Sidi Yahya–Sidi Kacem expressway via National Road No. 4.

The minister also mentioned the programming of the widening work on Regional Road No. 710 connecting Khénifra to Bejaâd over a distance of 85 kilometers. Estimated at a cost of 364 million dirhams, this work is part of a partnership agreement for the realization of road infrastructure projects in the Béni Mellal–Khénifra region, as provided for in the State-Region program contract (2020-2022), he specified.

Baraka also stated that the detailed studies for the project to widen the road to nine meters are progressing at a good pace, and he also assured that his department is working on the construction of the 104-kilometer highway connecting Guercif to Nador, requiring an investment of approximately 7.9 billion dirhams. A project that aims to connect the Nador West Med port to the national highway network.

The ministry, through the National Motorway Company of Morocco (ADM), is also accelerating the construction of the Tit Mellil–Berrechid (30 km) and the Rabat–Casablanca continental highway (59 km), he said.
