Billion-Dirham Road Project Aims to Revolutionize Rural Morocco’s Infrastructure

The Council of the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region will allocate one billion dirhams for the construction and maintenance of unclassified roads in the region over the period 2024-2027.
This project is part of a partnership agreement between the Council and the Ministry of Equipment and Transport, following the approval of the agreement by the Council during the proceedings of the ordinary session last July.
The project aims to improve the quality of the rural road network and strengthen the attractiveness of the territorial areas of the region, as well as attract investments and reduce social disparities and territorial inequalities, the council said. More specifically, it intends to improve access to certain rural municipalities and strengthen the road connection between the different provinces and cities of the region.
The agreement defines the institutional framework for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. In terms of investment, the Council will finance the program to reduce territorial and social disparities to the tune of 450 million dirhams. The Ministry of Equipment and Transport, for its part, will finance the realization of several road projects with a total length of 107 km in the province of Larache and the prefecture of Tanger-Assilah for a total amount of 106 million dirhams.
39 municipalities spread over the different prefectures and provinces of the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region will benefit from a financing of 444 million dirhams, including 250 million dirhams as a contribution from the Regional Council. The ultimate goal is to provide the municipalities with quality road infrastructure, meeting international standards, and to boost the local economy.
