Spanish Far-Right Leader Proposes Morocco-Funded Border Wall for Ceuta and Melilla

The leader of the Spanish far-right party VOX wants to erect a wall around the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, the costs of which would be borne by Morocco.

According to the Spanish media, Santiago Abascal, the leader of the Spanish far-right party VOX, would have followed in the footsteps of Donald Trump and proposed the construction of a concrete wall around the Spanish cities in northern Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla, in order to stop the illegal migration flow.

Abascal would also have proposed to replace the security forces with the army to monitor the borders during the construction period. "Morocco is the one who sends us waves of illegal immigrants to blackmail the European Union," he declares, wanting to force the kingdom to bear the cost of building the security wall.

The VOX leader goes even further by calling for an "anti-immigration" wall against migrants permanently assisted by NGOs who, according to him, "collaborate with the mafias and go to the African coasts to collect human goods".

His goal is to erect a psychological wall, legislation putting an end to any hope of regularizing the situations of migrants in the host countries and the automatic obtaining, according to him, of social assistance and health cards.

Emanating from Francoism, with Catholic and conservative components, the far-right party VOX has made this project its battle horse, forcing its way into the regional parliament of Andalusia in December 2018.

However, it should be noted that this project is not at all on the agenda of the Spanish Council of Ministers, which has just adopted a measure to remove the barbed wire at the level of these borders.
