New Scanner Controls Cause Delays for Travelers at Morocco's Tanger-Med Port

If you are used to passing through Tanger Med, know that for a few months now the customs services have put in place almost systematic scanner controls at the entrance and exit which greatly slow down the passages and therefore sometimes arouse the anger of Moroccans living abroad (MREs).

Those who had planned to pass quickly through Tanger-Med and even Tanger-ville, know that a good part of you will be forced to have your vehicles scanned. On arrival at the Tanger-Med port, travelers are randomly selected and forced to turn around to go through this famous control. Depending on the number of travelers on site, this procedure can sometimes take time, a lot of time.

A document is issued to the MREs for this purpose which must be endorsed by the agents present on site. Also know that only about ten cars can pass at a time, which promises long waits if the MREs are numerous to be sent. You thought that going through the scanner would spare you the "human" control at Tanger-Med, you are mistaken since your vehicle will be checked a second time by the customs officers. A double check that will no doubt annoy more than one.

The port of Tanger Med has had a second scanner for a few months now and MREs leaving must also submit to this rule. So be careful to arrive early to go through this procedure. Several MREs we interviewed complained of having missed their boat because of this procedure which can sometimes take up to 3 hours. Another also told us that he had waited more than an hour because the two scanners were out of order on the day of departure and agents were intervening for repairs. The travelers present on site had to negotiate with the local authorities and gently raise their voices so that the customs and police officers carry out an "old-fashioned" check and finally allow them to take the boat.
