One car every 60 seconds. That is the impressive pace described by Belgian media outlet MO*, whose journalist John Vandaele visited Renault’s plant in Tangier. The finished vehicles are loaded onto trains that carry them to the port of Tanger Med, 33 kilometers away.

This rail link was an essential condition for the manufacturer’s decision to set up in Morocco. “Building this railway line was a condition for us to set up the plant here,” explains Miguel Olivier Boquera, the site’s managing director.

Production is almost entirely geared toward foreign markets. According to the executive, 90% of the vehicles are exported, mainly to the European Union, where they benefit from duty-free access.

65% of components already made in Morocco

Another advantage of Tangier is its supplier network. According to Miguel Olivier Boquera, 65% of components, excluding engines and gearboxes, are made in Morocco. The goal is to reach 75% by 2030.

The plant employs 7,000 people, with a further 11,000 working for direct suppliers, according to Ahmed Bahnis, an official with the UMT union. The site also stands out for its energy supply: 70% of its electricity comes from wind power, with the rest from biomass.
