Police Officers Among Four Arrested in Béni Mellal Fraud and Corruption Ring

The National Office for the Fight against Economic and Financial Crimes of the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) referred on Tuesday before the Court of Appeal of Béni Mellal four individuals, including two police officers, a repeat offender and his son. The defendants, aged between 21 and 59, are members of a network known for fraud, aggravated theft and corruption.

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) states that the two police officers are accused of disclosure of professional secrecy and failure to report a wanted person and complicity. They are a chief officer serving at the Béni Mellal police prefecture and a female police officer serving in the documentation and national identity card service in the Casablanca prefecture.

According to the initial elements of the investigation, the main defendant, assisted by his son, defrauded many people through a front company that sells fictitious real estate. His victims are mainly merchants who have swallowed millions of dirhams thinking they were making a good deal, the DGSN specifies.

In addition to issuing rubber checks and commercial bonds without provision, the police investigations also showed that the main defendant is involved in an aggravated burglary committed with the complicity of three other people, who have all been arrested and taken into custody before being presented to the public prosecutor’s office supervising the investigation, the statement adds.

The same source stresses that the searches carried out at the homes of the defendants made it possible to seize checkbooks, bank cards, money orders bearing the names of the main defendant and his son, and significant sums of national currency.

The accused have been taken into custody pending the results of the investigation, which will determine the degree of their participation and involvement in the activities of this criminal conspiracy.
