Cryptocurrency Scam Leads to Arrests in Casablanca Bitcoin Extortion Ring

Elements of the National Office for the Fight against Economic and Financial Crimes, part of the National Judicial Police Brigade, arrested seven individuals allegedly involved in a criminal network active in kidnapping, sequestration and identity theft regulated by law for the purpose of extortion.
In a press release, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) reports that the five suspects had deceived the victim, who is active in the illegal exchange of currencies, following the conclusion of a fictitious agreement to transfer "Bitcoin", before impersonating police officers and arresting him on the outskirts of Casablanca for extortion.
Informed, the police services conducted investigations that led to the arrest of the accused in flagrante delicto as they were carrying out a fake search of the victim’s home in "Dar Bouazza" in the suburbs of Casablanca. They hoped to steal the sums of money obtained from the alleged illegal transfers from the victim’s home, the statement said.
The police then searched the home of the illegal currency trader and were able to seize about 15 million dirhams, while the search of the suspects’ homes allowed the seizure of mobile phones, a motorcycle and four cars, one of which contained two bladed weapons, adds the DGSN.
The five individuals directly involved in these criminal acts, as well as the brother of the arrested police officer and his fiancée, as well as the alleged victim of these crimes, were taken into custody for the investigation to determine whether this case is linked to money laundering, concludes the DGSN.
