A new police force in Marrakech

Marrakech is working on the implementation of an urban planning police force to strengthen territorial control and management.

Marrakech is preparing to set up an urban planning police force. On Thursday, an expanded meeting chaired by the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, Governor of the Prefecture of Marrakech, Khatib El Hebil, was held at the headquarters of the Wilaya of the Marrakech-Safi region in the ochre city, reports Le Matin. It was attended by authority agents. This meeting is part of a new institutional dynamic aimed at organizing, coordinating and strengthening control, monitoring and sanctioning operations for offenses, according to a statement from the Wilaya of the region. This project mobilizes several services. They held a series of meetings this week. Objective: to finalize the outlines of the project.

What will the urban planning police force’s mission be? It will be exclusively dedicated to planning issues and building control, as part of efforts to strengthen territorial governance and promote the quality of urban management at the level of the Prefecture of Marrakech, the same source said. The ambition is to improve the quality of services offered to citizens, particularly in terms of public safety, supervision and regulation of the urban domain, as well as the handling of complaints related to this sector, in accordance with the provisions of the organic law on local authorities.

Through this initiative, Marrakech intends to consolidate the mechanisms of administrative control on the ground and enshrine the principles of transparency and accountability in the management of local affairs, in order to preserve the urban fabric against infractions and illegal practices, and contribute to a balanced and sustainable urban development. Already, a group of specialized technicians has been selected to form the initial core of this new unit, which will bring together authority agents and technicians in the prefecture, the municipality of Marrakech and the Urban Agency, the statement continues.
