Marrakech under heavy police surveillance

The Marrakech police have commissioned a new surveillance center this Tuesday at the headquarters of the tourist brigade. This installation aims to strengthen the control of the old city thanks to advanced technologies, including facial recognition systems.

Inaugurated in the presence of the wali of security, this room constitutes a central observation post for activities within the medina. The installed equipment allows to cover all the access points, as well as the public squares and the historical sites. The objective is to ensure permanent monitoring of movements in these frequented areas and to facilitate rapid intervention of the teams on the ground in case of an incident.

The technical system is based on a fleet of 262 cameras. The head of the regional security has detailed the composition of this network: 176 fixed cameras, 23 360-degree mobile cameras, 45 facial recognition units and 18 license plate readers. This deployment follows a plan established by the central services and remains attached to the Command Center of the Police Prefecture.

The agents assigned to this room have received specific training to master these tools. The infrastructure also includes a meeting room for emergency management. This project is part of the authorities’ desire to modernize urban security and increase the sense of security among residents and tourists.
