Casablanca Unleashes Cleanliness Crackdown: New Urban Police Force to Combat Littering
Casablanca is finally preparing to establish a cleanliness police force. A project that has been announced for years and whose implementation has been postponed several times.
Aborted on many occasions, the implementation of the Cleanliness Police in Casablanca will be a reality in the coming days. The authorities of the economic capital of the kingdom are preparing to launch the gradual deployment of patrols of the new police force before the end of the year. Jointly funded by the municipality and the Ministry of the Interior, this project aims to restore urban order and put an end to the chronic incivility of certain citizens.
In detail, the new brigade, which will be under the supervision of the "Casa Environnement" company, the technical arm of the municipal council, will wage a fierce battle against incivil behavior: illegal dumping of waste, littering from vehicles, abandonment of bulky items or non-compliance with collection schedules. In this context, the cleanliness police will carry out regular patrols and will not hesitate to impose fines on offenders.
The agents of the sanitation police will wear a uniform bearing the logo of the brigade and will move in vehicles equipped with digital systems allowing them to report and document infractions in real time. The new police force will be led by a board of directors, chaired by Wali Mohamed Mhidia. Nafissa Ramhan, deputy mayor in charge of the public health sector, will coordinate the activities of the brigade.
To recall, the Casablanca municipality had tried in 2017 to set up a sanitation police force. The objective was to raise awareness among residents, merchants and restaurateurs so that they adopt environmentally friendly gestures. The project should initially target high tourist areas before being extended to popular neighborhoods. But the initiative was not conclusive after an experiment in two prefectures, including Anfa and Moulay Rachid.
