Muslim Man Attacks Medical Staff for Removing Wife's Hijab During Emergency Birth

Health workers in the emergency department of Alhama de Murcia were victims of aggression and threats from a Moroccan whose wife was about to give birth. They had gone to the couple’s home to transfer the latter, who had lost her waters, to the hospital. The removal of the pregnant woman’s hijab to administer emergency care sparked her husband’s anger.

The victims (a doctor, a nurse and a technician) went to the couple’s home with an ambulance, after receiving a call reporting that "a lady had broken her waters and did not have a car" to go to the hospital. Once on site, the agents recovered the pregnant woman, of Muslim faith, who was wearing a hijab covering her head and neck. They then placed her on the stretcher to put on a mask and other medical devices necessary for care. But the hijab she was wearing made the task difficult for the agents who had to remove it. "The lady did not object" to the removal of the hijab, but her husband assaulted the agents, reports La Opinion de Murcia. "He pushed us, told us we were racists and that we did not respect his traditions."

The Moroccan then refused for his wife to get into the ambulance because two of the health workers were men. Faced with his violent acts, the agents had to call the local police to restrain him. This allowed the woman to be quickly taken to the hospital where she gave birth a few hours later.

The assaulted health workers went to the police station afterwards to file a complaint against the 39-year-old Moroccan. "It’s the first time a man cares more about a headscarf than his child," they lamented.
