Morocco’s 150-vehicle WhAP order gives Tata a springboard into Africa

From October 26 to 29, Tata Advanced Systems took part in the first edition of the Africa International Defence Exhibition, held in Lagos, Nigeria. Among the equipment on display was the WhAP 8×8, an armored vehicle whose production was launched in Morocco. Its presence marks a new stage in the Indian manufacturer’s commercial strategy in Africa.

According to specialist outlet DefenceWeb, which reported on the presentation on October 28, Tata is seeking to strengthen its foothold on the continent. The exhibition brings together military delegations, defense procurement officials and manufacturers showcasing their equipment.

For Morocco, the stakes go beyond manufacturing armored vehicles for its own army. The Berrechid plant, inaugurated in September 2025, was designed to meet the national order while developing export opportunities.

The industrial site covers 20,000 square meters. It assembles the WhAP, an eight-wheeled amphibious vehicle developed by Tata with India’s Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Weighing around 24 tonnes, it can carry a crew of three and up to eleven soldiers. Its modular design allows it to be adapted for troop transport, reconnaissance or various combat missions.

After the Moroccan army, the African market

The first order is for 150 armored vehicles for the Royal Armed Forces, under an agreement concluded in 2024. The first units manufactured in Morocco were delivered to the army in December 2025. The contract now serves as an industrial reference that Tata can present to other buyers.

The Nigerian showcase comes as the manufacturer is also considering producing a second vehicle in Morocco, the lighter LAMV 4×4. The proposed expansion of the product range would complement WhAP production.

At the inauguration of Berrechid, India’s Ministry of Defence had already described the plant as a future export platform. It projected that about a third of the components would initially be sourced and assembled locally, with the aim of gradually raising Moroccan added value to 50%.
