Morocco Unveils Subsidy Plan for Tomato, Potato, and Onion Farmers Amid Rising Inflation

Due to soaring inflation, the Moroccan government will subsidize the production of tomatoes, onions and potatoes for the first time, announced Mohamed Seddiki, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.
In detail, the government will subsidize tomato production at a rate of 40,000 to 70,000 dirhams (3,600 to 6,300 euros) per hectare, Seddiki said before the House of Representatives, adding that potato production will benefit from a subsidy between 8,000 and 15,000 dirhams (between 720 and 1,300 euros) per hectare, and onion production between 4,000 and 5,000 dirhams (between 360 and 450 euros) per hectare.
For the current agricultural season, the Moroccan government will mobilize 600,000 tons of phosphate fertilizers and subsidize imported nitrogen fertilizers to the tune of 2.2 billion dirhams (200 million euros), the Minister of Agriculture said, recalling that this agricultural season comes in a particular context of severe drought, high inflation of raw material and agricultural input prices, and after the devastating earthquake of September 8.
According to the latest forecasts from the Ministry of Agriculture, citrus production is expected to reach 1.69 million tons, an increase of 5% compared to the previous season. Olive production, on the other hand, is expected to record a decrease of 1.07 million tons.
