Morocco’s Ambitious 3.3km Tunnel Kickstarts High-Speed Rail Revolution in Rabat

The launch of the development work on a new railway tunnel in Rabat marks the beginning of a key phase for the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail (HSR) line project. This underground infrastructure is designed to modernize the national transportation network, improve mobility within the capital, and strengthen the interconnection between Morocco’s major cities.
The realization of this structure has been awarded to a consortium formed by the Moroccan company SGTM and the Chinese company Sinohydro Bureau 5co. Obtaining this contract positions the group as a central player in the implementation of the second phase of the Al Boraq project, the Moroccan high-speed train. The tunnel is indeed an essential segment of the future high-speed line.
From a technical standpoint, the tunnel will extend over a total length of 3.3 kilometers, from the banks of the Bouregreg River to the Rabat Agdal station. Its structure is divided into three distinct sections:
• a 2,750-meter-long main double-track tunnel,
• a 50-meter open trench,
• a 500-meter-long covered four-track tunnel approaching the station.
The construction schedule for this infrastructure is set at 42 months, for an estimated total cost of 1.41 billion dirhams. The financing of these works is ensured within the framework of the national development program for high-speed rail infrastructure, confirming the strategic scope of the investment.
The objectives of this project are multiple. Firstly, it is to allow the passage of the high-speed train through the capital without affecting surface traffic. Secondly, it will contribute to the reduction of travel times between the served cities. Finally, the structure is intended to alleviate road and rail traffic congestion in the Rabat area, which should result in an improvement in the quality of service for all passengers.
