Morocco Travel Surges: Brussels Airport Sees 133% Increase in Flights to North African Destination
Morocco, Spain, Greece, Italy and France are among the most popular destinations in Belgium. As a result, Brussels Airport achieved good performance last month.
According to Brussels Airport, Greece (89% of 2019 figures) and Morocco (133% of 2019 figures) "continue to perform well," reports Belga. In August, the most popular destinations were Spain, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Turkey, Portugal, France, Germany, the United States and Switzerland. In total, 1,469,406 passengers traveled through Brussels Airport last month, compared to 570,000 passengers in August 2020. A strong increase in traffic for the Brussels airport. Compared to August 2019, this figure still represents a considerable decrease (more than 2.6 million passengers had traveled through the airport). Attendance has gradually increased throughout the months of July and August, it is noted. In total, 2.7 million passengers were recorded.
Regarding the growth in freight volumes, it continued in August (+35% compared to 2020). Air freight growth (+34%) is observed in the three segments, namely full cargo (+40%), express services (+17%), "but also freight transport on passenger flights (+76%) which continues to recover thanks to the increase in the number of passenger flights, although these volumes are still 33% below the August 2019 volumes," says Brussels Airport.
"We have not yet reached the 5.3 million passengers recorded in the summer of 2019, but confidence in travel is returning, and it has been demonstrated again this summer that it is possible to travel safely, thanks to vaccination and/or testing," says Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport Company, in a press release.
