Morocco, Spain, Turkey, France and the United States are among the most visited destinations by Belgians in 2021. As in the previous year, Brussels Airport expects a strong increase in the number of passengers in 2022.
According to Brussels Airport, the most visited destinations in 2021 are: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Germany, Greece, France, Morocco, the United States and Switzerland, reports Air Journal. With more than 60% of 2019 rates, Greece and the kingdom posted good results compared to 2019. In 2021, 9,357,221 passengers traveled through Brussels-Zaventem, an increase of 39% compared to the crisis year 2020 (6.7 million passengers), but a decrease of 64% compared to 2019 (26.4 million passengers). With nearly 1.5 million passengers, or 56% of the 2019 level, August was the best month of 2021.
As for total freight volumes, they reached 843,140 tons, an increase of 30% compared to 2020. As for air freight volumes, they recorded an increase of 31% compared to 2020 and 33% compared to 2019, the best result since 2007. This is the strongest annual growth ever recorded by Brussels Airport, making it "one of the airports with the strongest growth in freight volumes in Europe," it is specified.
"It has been two years since the aviation sector has been affected by the Covid crisis, but I am pleased that we were able to achieve a strong increase in the number of passengers in 2021, mainly during the second half of the year. Although the beginning of 2021 was heavily impacted by travel restrictions and measures, from the summer onwards we were able to observe a recovery and welcome an increasing number of passengers," explains Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport. He says he is hopeful for the future. "The recovery will be gradual, but we expect this positive trend to continue in 2022," he added.
