Morocco’s Air Passenger Traffic Surges 39% in 2021, Still Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

In 2021, Moroccan airports recorded commercial air traffic of more than 9.9 million passengers, up 38.9% compared to 2020, according to the National Airports Authority (ONDA).
These figures reflect a resurgence of activity at Moroccan airport platforms, despite the persistence of the health crisis, reports the MAP.
Thus, "the volume of commercial passenger traffic increased, reaching 9,938,607 passengers, more than a third of which was recorded during the period from June 15 to August 31, compared to 7,155,091 passengers welcomed during the year 2020, an increase of around 38.9%. This traffic represents 40% of the air traffic recorded in 2019," said a statement from the authority.
In detail, the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca welcomed 4,150,015 passengers, up 38.4% compared to 2020, ONDA said, adding that the airports of Tetouan, Guelmim, Dakhla, Nador and Tanger are the airports that have recorded the highest recovery rates compared to 2019 traffic.
Despite the health crisis and insufficient consumer savings, domestic air traffic increased by 39.6% compared to 2020, reaching 1,582,220 passengers, and a decrease of 47.37% compared to 2019.
International air traffic, on the other hand, recorded 8,356,387 passengers, an increase of 38.77% compared to 2020 and a decrease of 62.13% compared to 2019. This traffic represents 84% of total air traffic.
Air freight recorded during the past year an increase of 13.94% compared to 2020 and a decrease of 27.19% compared to 2019. It stood at 69,981.49 tons compared to 61,419.26 tons in 2020 and 96,120.76 in 2019.
