Morocco's Airport Traffic Plummets 78% in First Half of 2021 Amid Travel Slump

In the first half of 2021, Moroccan airports recorded a 78.8% decline in commercial passenger traffic. The number of passengers stands at 2,473,988 travelers at the end of June 2021 compared to 11,669,548 during the same period in 2019.

In detail, the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca welcomed 1,238,912 passengers, down 73.48% compared to the 1st half of 2019, followed by Tangier, Marrakech and Nador.

Hit by weak economic growth, insufficient consumer savings, and their low desire to travel, domestic air traffic has not yet recovered. With 652,147 passengers welcomed during the 1st half of 2021, there is a 53.68% decline compared to the same period in 2019.

Down 82.25% compared to the first half of 2019, international air traffic, which represents almost 74% of total traffic, recorded 1,821,841 passengers. This declining result concerns all markets, particularly Europe, which represents more than 72% of global air traffic, with a 83.88% decline compared to the same period in 2019, the office notes.

During the 1st half of 2021, there were 30,091 airport movements, down -69.54% compared to the same period in 2019. The share of Mohammed V Airport is 49.94% of this traffic, Tangier Ibn Battouta (9.64%) and Marrakech Menara (9.09%).

Air freight recorded a -27.64% reduction during the 1st half of 2021 compared to the same period in 2019. It stood at 35,236.72 tons compared to 48,696.31 tons in the 1st half of 2019, the same source points out.
