Morocco’s Train Delays Prompt Minister’s Response Amid Modernization Efforts

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, provided clarification on the delays affecting shuttle trains and high-speed shuttle trains in Morocco.
While acts of vandalism and technical failures are pointed out, the National Railway Office (ONCF) claims to be multiplying efforts to improve the quality of its services.
In 2023, the punctuality rate of trains reached 88.8%, a figure slightly down compared to 2022. The Kénitra axis shows a rate of 87.1%, while that of the airport reaches 92%. Yet the ONCF is sparing no effort.
Significant investments have been made to modernize rail infrastructure and equipment. A high-tech control center allows real-time traffic monitoring and rapid response in the event of an incident. If traffic is interrupted, alternative solutions, such as the provision of buses or taxis, are offered to passengers.
Aware of the challenges, particularly with the upcoming organization of international events in Morocco, the ONCF indicates that it has put in place an ambitious development plan. 168 new modern trains, including 150 for intercity transport and 18 for high-speed lines, will be gradually put into service between 2027 and 2030. The objective, it is affirmed, is to improve the comfort and safety of passengers, and to make Morocco an essential destination for major events.
