Morocco Greenlights International License Plates, Easing Travel Woes for Drivers

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has officially authorized the use of international format license plates throughout the Moroccan territory. Until now, their use was in principle reserved only for vehicles intended to circulate outside the borders of the Kingdom.
This decision does not constitute a reform of the regulations, but a clarification of existing texts, in particular the order of September 29, 2010 and Article 28 of Ministerial Order No. 2711.10. The application of this provision had remained limited or subject to interpretation until now.
The measure aims to address the practical and legal difficulties encountered by many Moroccan motorists during their travels abroad. Mainly in Europe, the non-compliance of national plates written in Arabic characters has led to financial penalties, sometimes of several hundred euros, for reasons of readability or absence of the country code "MA".
According to the ministry, this clarification therefore aims to put an end to these inconveniences, while ensuring Morocco’s compliance with international conventions, including the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. The administration specifies that the national registration system remains fully in force.
