Morocco's Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway Project Nears Reality, Boosting Southern Economic Development

The Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, the subject of a partnership agreement signed in 2015, will soon be a reality. This is a large-scale project that could strengthen the economic complementarity between the regions of the South and Souss-Massa.

This agreement was signed on the occasion of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Green March, as part of the new development model for the southern provinces. It aims to give impetus to the relations between the southern provinces and the other regions of the Kingdom. This involves road comfort and safety, the rapid transport of goods between the cities of southern Morocco and the major production and distribution centers.

Khalil Ramadan is an official at the Ministry of Equipment, Transport and Logistics. He indicated that this mega-project is full of great ambitions, in the sense that it will "constantly strengthen the economic and commercial ties between Morocco and its African depth and improve national road safety indices". Indeed, the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway project involves "the duplication of National Road No. 1 between Tiznit and Laâyoune, over 555 km, and the widening to 9m of the road between Laâyoune and Dakhla over a distance of 500 km, according to the MAP.

According to the same source, the progress of the first section, with a total budget of 420 MDH, is 49%, while 12% of the work on the second has been completed for a total cost of 435 MDH.
