Morocco’s Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway Construction Advances, Completion Expected in 2021

The construction work on the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, a project dear to King Mohammed VI, is progressing rapidly. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021.
The progress rate in the northern part varies between 60% and 12%, depending on the sections, Yassine Zitoune, head of planning for the northern Tiznit-Tantan section at the provisional directorate in charge of the road development between Tiznit and Dakhla, told Le360. The northern part connecting Tiznit and Oued El Ouaer (Tan Tan province) over 340 km is divided into 9 sections and includes 13 engineering structures, he specified. As for the section connecting Guelmim to Zerouila over a length of about 22.6 km, it is already completed. The section between Tiznit and the southern entrance of Guelmim, over 144 km, has been built on a new alignment, with motorway standards.
The two components of this expressway project are: the duplication of the N1 national road between Tiznit and Laâyoune over 555 km, and the widening to 9 m of the road between Laâyoune and Dakhla over a distance of 500 km. In order to ensure the completion and monitoring of the work, the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water intends to create a central directorate in Laâyoune, said Mr. Zitoune, specifying that the completion of the work on this project is scheduled for the end of 2021.
