Morocco Slips to 75th Place in 2020 Global Innovation Index Rankings

Morocco ranks 75th out of 131 economies evaluated in the 2020 Global Innovation Index. It thus falls back one place compared to 2019.
The Kingdom struggles to convince in terms of innovation but is making efforts to encourage innovation at different levels, reports Hespress. It has also fallen back in terms of innovation inputs, ranking 85th, a drop compared to 2019 and 2018. As for innovation outputs, the country is ranked 69th, also down compared to 2019 and 2018.
Regarding the performance register, Morocco ranks 8th out of the 29 lower-middle-income economies. Among the 19 economies of North Africa and Western Asia, it ranks 10th out of the 19 economies of North Africa and Western Asia.
According to the Global Innovation Index, Morocco’s performance in this area exceeds expectations compared to its gross domestic product and economic growth. The same source states that the country has excelled in transforming the investments made in innovation into products and services. Production volume is increasing compared to the level of investment, it is specified.
As for the results obtained in the seven pillars on which the Global Innovation Index is based, Morocco has distinguished itself in the field of "knowledge & technology" (60th) and "infrastructure" (71st), against a weaker performance in "business sophistication" (107th). The seven pillars aim to account for the means implemented in terms of innovation as well as the results obtained. Subdivided into sub-pillars, each pillar has several distinct indicators.
