Morocco six-month vehicle rule for MREs explained

MREs and foreign tourists can benefit from the temporary admission regime for their personal vehicles registered abroad. This rule allows you to drive in Morocco with a foreign car without proceeding immediately to definitive customs clearance.

The Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration reminds, however, that this temporary admission is granted for a maximum period of six months, continuous or split, per calendar year. The vehicle’s stay can therefore be carried out in a single visit or in multiple entries, but the total must not exceed this limit.

A limit attached to the vehicle

The important point is that this limit applies to the vehicle. A vehicle that has already stayed six months in Morocco can no longer benefit from the temporary admission regime during the same calendar year. Customs clarifies that this impossibility applies even if the vehicle is imported by a third party with a power of attorney.

Upon expiration of the regulatory period, the vehicle’s situation must be regularized. It must be re-exported before the end of the authorized period or customs cleared under the conditions provided, with payment of applicable duties and taxes.

Customs also reminds that vehicles placed under temporary admission cannot be subject to a transfer of ownership to persons residing in Morocco before payment of applicable duties, taxes and penalties.

For MREs who regularly return to Morocco with their foreign car, the rule is therefore simple: six months per calendar year, no more. Once this period is consumed, the vehicle cannot be reintroduced under the same regime the same year, even by power of attorney.
