Morocco Car Rules: MRE Guide to Temporary Admission
Every summer, many MREs travel to Morocco with their foreign-registered vehicles. This entry is authorized, but it follows a specific regime: temporary admission. Duration, documents, vehicle use, lending to a relative… several rules must be understood before departure.
Moroccans residing abroad can enter Morocco with a passenger car or light commercial vehicle, provided that the vehicle is intended for strictly personal and tourist use. The car can be registered normally or provisionally.

This regime, called temporary admission, allows the vehicle to stay in Morocco for 180 days per calendar year. This duration can be used in a single trip or in multiple stays. Once this period is exhausted, the vehicle cannot remain in Morocco without regularization.
Upon entry, temporary admission is processed by customs services, aboard the ferry or at the border post. A circulation document, called a temporary admission card, is then issued to the traveler. It contains the vehicle’s information, the importer’s identity, and the expiration date. This document must be kept and presented in case of inspection in Morocco.
A car for personal use
Customs emphasizes an important point: a vehicle admitted temporarily cannot be used as freely available property. Lending, transfer, sale, or making available to a third party without administrative authorization may constitute a customs offense.
A vehicle under temporary admission can be driven in Morocco by another person residing abroad, provided they have the necessary documents: registration certificate, valid temporary admission card, and proof of residence abroad. However, a resident of Morocco can only drive the vehicle in the presence of the importer holding the temporary admission.
At the end of the stay, the vehicle must be re-exported before the authorized period expires. It can also be cleared through customs, according to regulatory conditions, with payment of applicable duties and taxes. In case of delay, penalties are provided and their amount depends on the duration of the delay.
MREs entering Morocco with a rental car can also benefit from temporary admission. However, they must present the vehicle’s documents, their residence permit abroad, and the rental contract.
