Moroccan Customs Vehicle Lending Rules for MREs

Moroccans residing abroad who come to Morocco with their car must comply with temporary admission rules. This regime allows the use of a vehicle registered abroad during the stay, but it does not automatically authorize lending it to a relative or third party.

Moroccan customs clarifies that a vehicle placed under temporary admission can be driven in Morocco, without prior agreement, by any person residing abroad. This person must, however, be able to present the required documents, namely the vehicle registration certificate, the valid temporary admission card and proof of residence abroad.

A resident in Morocco cannot freely drive the car

The rule is stricter for persons residing in Morocco. The guide indicates that driving a temporarily admitted vehicle can only be entrusted to a Morocco resident in the presence of the importer holding the temporary admission card.

In other words, an MRE cannot simply leave his car to a relative established in Morocco for him to use freely in his absence. This situation may constitute a customs offense if it does not comply with the conditions provided.

The guide also reminds that making available to third parties, lending, transfer or use of a temporarily admitted vehicle, even with a power of attorney, may constitute customs offenses when done without authorization from the Customs Administration.

Other rules apply to take the car out of Morocco

If the owner cannot re-export his vehicle himself, another person may be authorized to drive it abroad. This authorization must be requested from the customs office closest to the residence in Morocco.

However, when it is a person themselves residing abroad, customs authorization is not necessary to drive the vehicle out of Morocco, provided they have the required documents and a power of attorney.

In all cases, the MRE who imported the car remains responsible to customs until the vehicle is re-exported or cleared through customs. This is therefore an essential rule to know before lending your vehicle during a stay in Morocco.
