Morocco Sends Imams to Europe for Ramadan: Religious Diplomacy in Action

Gathered at the Mohammed VI Institute in Rabat, this delegation, made up of 22 preachers, 19 female preachers and 309 imams, received its final guidance before departure. The objective is to provide spiritual support based on the Kingdom’s religious constants—the Maliki rite and Ash‘ari doctrine—while strictly respecting the laws of the host countries.

Religious diplomacy: promoting an Islam of tolerance and moderation

This annual initiative, which also covers Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Estonia, aims to preserve the cultural identity of Moroccan residents abroad. According to the official at the Supreme Council of Ulema, this mission helps “bring the atmosphere of Ramadan to Moroccans around the world as if they were back home,” while strengthening the bridges between Moroccan civilization and the West.

Beyond the ritual aspect, the members of the mission have been instructed to promote the values of “tolerance, coexistence and good neighborliness.” For one member of the delegation, this large-scale deployment reflects the Royal High Solicitude toward MREs, ensuring a moderate religious practice protected from extremist currents within mosques managed in partnership with the Kingdom’s consulates.
