Morocco Road Deaths Rise Despite 1140 Radars Deployed

Morocco is strengthening its radars, but the road continues to kill massively. In 2025, the country recorded more than 160,000 traffic accidents, which claimed 4,577 lives.

The figure was presented by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, at the opening of the board meeting of the National Road Safety Agency. The minister highlighted the expansion of the national radar network, now increased to 1,140 units.

For Kayouh, this deployment is among the main results of the agency’s action in 2025. It is added to the program for renewing the fleet of road transport vehicles, endowed with an envelope of 143 million dirhams.

Radars are not enough

But road mortality figures show that automated control does not solve everything. Pedestrians, motorcycle drivers and three-wheeler users represent more than 70% of victims.

This reality is pushing the ministry to prepare a new national road safety strategy for the 2026-2030 period. The stated objective is ambitious: reduce the number of deaths on roads by 50% by 2030.

The minister believes a new approach is necessary. Traffic has changed, with the multiplication of electric scooters, individual vehicles and delivery services, particularly in major cities.

These new uses require rethinking prevention, control and awareness policies. Morocco is therefore facing not just a problem of radars or sanctions, but a rapid transformation of road behaviors.
