Morocco Ranks Second Globally in Climate Action Performance Index
The 2019 Climate Performance Index, developed by Germanwatch, the Newclimate Institute and the Climate Action Network International (CAN), ranks Morocco as the second country in the world in terms of climate action. In this ranking, Morocco beats Lithuania and comes just after Sweden.
Several criteria are defined to develop the climate performance index. These include "national greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energies, climate policy and energy consumption". According to the report, over the past five years, Morocco has made considerable efforts in favor of the climate by "significantly increasing the share of renewable energies in its energy mix".
And the fact that the country has "the largest solar power plant in the world, and many wind farms", shows how much the concern to protect the environment remains great. It had initially planned to produce 52% of its energy from solar by 2030. An ambition that will be revised upwards, at the request of King Mohammed VI, reports agenceecofin.
According to the same source, Morocco has also set up "the Initiative for the Adaptation of African Agriculture aimed at better management by the agricultural sector of climate change risks and better management of the country’s water resources".
