Morocco Climbs to 7th Place in Global Climate Change Performance Index

8th in the previous edition, Morocco ranks 7th in the 2023 edition of the Climate Change Performance Index ranking, thus gaining one place. It is therefore among the 10 most performing countries.
"Like the two previous editions, Morocco ranks well in three main CCPI categories, namely GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, energy consumption and climate policy," states the 2023 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) report, compiled by the Non-Governmental Organizations Germanwatch and the Climate Action Network International as well as the German Institute New Climate Institute.
After recalling that Morocco has committed to a target of planting 600,000 hectares of forest by 2030, the CCPI experts praised the positive developments the kingdom has made in recent years. However, they criticize the current laws due to their lack of enforcement power and the lack of adherence of the industrial sector to them.
The CCPI also hypothesized that if Morocco maintains its positive trend in renewable energies, it should also improve in the other two indicators. However, the report notes that Morocco lacks the will to decentralize renewable energies and encourage citizens to produce their own renewable energy.
An independent monitoring tool, the Climate Performance Index allows to monitor the performance of countries in terms of climate protection. It aims to strengthen the transparency of international climate policy and allows to compare the climate protection efforts and progress made by each country.
