Morocco’s Renewable Energy Push Hailed as Global Leader by German Media

Morocco’s achievements in renewable energy are seducing beyond its borders. This is evidenced by a publication in the German newspaper Die Welt, which believes that Morocco’s green energy is one of the "most ambitious energy programs in the world".
Morocco began developing renewable energy in 2009 to meet the increase in electricity demand. In 2016, one third of energy needs came from renewable energy and it should be 42% by the end of this year. This feat has seduced the German newspaper Die Welt which has hailed Morocco’s successful strategy, led under the impetus of King Mohammed VI. "By 2030, 52% of electricity should come from renewable energy. This is a big leap forward for Morocco," writes the German daily.
Optimizing the use of electricity from the Noor power plant in Ouarzazate, the world’s largest solar complex, in order to ensure the kingdom’s independence. This is Morocco’s goal in embarking on green energy, the newspaper points out. "This solar power plant and others, the wind turbines and the dams, should not only guarantee a large part of Morocco’s energy supply in ten years, but also provide electricity to Europe".
Morocco’s ambition is to sell solar and wind power to Europe and become a renewable energy producer for the European Union, the German daily notes. The kingdom is already working to deliver electricity to Europe. Germany and other European countries even negotiated a roadmap for renewable energy trade with Morocco last year, the newspaper recalls. In this perspective, solar stations should not only be built around Ouarzazate, but also in other areas.
