Morocco Rises to 2nd Place in Global Climate Protection Index

The 2019 Climate Protection Index awarded Morocco a score of 70.48, which places it in 2nd place. Sweden, the group leader, scored 76.28 and tops the list of 56 countries.
This score is attributed to the Kingdom by the 2019 Climate Protection Index, following 14 criteria in 4 categories, including greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energies, energy consumption and climate policy.
With this ranking, Morocco gains one place and inherits the 2nd place, thus becoming the most performing country in this year’s Climate Protection Index. As such, it ranks fifth (the top 3 places were not awarded, note the authors) ", note Germanwatch, New Climate Institute and Climate Action Network, the authors of the Index.
According to the same source, this performance is due to the "considerable" increase in the share of renewable energies over the past five years.
According to the report’s editors, "The country (Morocco, editor’s note) is on the right track to achieve its goal of 42% of installed renewable energy capacity in 2020 and 52% in 2030".
It should be noted that they also took into account Morocco’s low CO2 emissions and the Kingdom’s commitment to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 42% as part of its national commitments made to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
