Morocco Rises to 4th Place in Global Climate Change Performance Index

Morocco is now in the prestigious rank of countries working to reduce global warming, in accordance with the 2015 Paris Agreement (COP 21).
Ranked just behind Sweden, the United Kingdom and Denmark, Morocco has risen to 4th place in the climate change performance index ranking out of 158 countries (representing 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions). The Kingdom has scored 65.7 points and is ahead of Norway, Chile, Finland and Switzerland.
"As in previous years, Morocco scores highly in all categories (GHG emissions, energy consumption, climate policy) except for renewable energies," says the commentary accompanying the release of the report.
In the renewable energy category, Morocco has indeed inherited three places, but its ranking remains "average". This position is justified by "the currently very low levels of renewable energy in energy use, the report specifies. According to the experts, the recent investments in public rail transport, as well as relatively strong legislation on energy efficiency are acceptable.
Furthermore, Morocco has benefited from a high score for its international climate policy because the experts have praised the commendable commitment of the kingdom to the Paris Agreement and its involvement in climate alliances. The other criterion that has favored Morocco is its position as a leader in energy and sustainability on the African continent.
