Morocco Orders Widespread Closures of Public Spaces Amid COVID-19 Concerns

In Morocco, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and theaters, banquet halls, clubs and sports halls, hammams, game rooms and neighborhood playgrounds, will be closed to the public, starting this Monday, March 16.

According to the communiqué of the Ministry of the Interior, this decision does not concern souks, shops and premises for the sale of basic products and materials, and restaurants that deliver at home. The Ministry of the Interior will ensure the continuous and regular supply of national markets with basic products, in sufficient quantities in the various sales outlets, and that distribution channels are not affected.

Furthermore, the ministry calls on all citizens to adhere to and strongly contribute, with a sense of responsibility and patriotism, and to interact positively with all the orientations and measures taken to manage this exceptional situation. At the same time, it invites them to avoid going to places of large gatherings and to respect the general norms of prevention and health safety recommended by the competent authorities.

In addition to these new measures, the Moroccan government had already ordered, last week, the temporary closure of schools, the cancellation of all events gathering an audience of more than 50 people, and the suspension of all flights and maritime lines connecting Morocco to the rest of the world.
