Morocco Names Vahid Halilhodžić as New National Soccer Team Coach
Pending confirmation by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) on Thursday, August 15, 2019, Vahid Halilhodžić is officially the brand new coach of the Moroccan national team. The former Nantes coach succeeds French technician Hervé Renard.
The saga of the search for a coach for the Moroccan national football team has lasted several weeks. It has just come to an end through the official choice of Vahid Halilhodžić. The Bosnian is now the new coach of the Atlas Lions, following the proposal of Blanc, whose offer exceeded the financial forecasts of the FRMF.
Meeting on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, in Rabat, with Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), the Bosnian gave his agreement to take over the national team. The former coach of Algeria and Japan, who has terminated his contract with FC Nantes (French Ligue 1), thus succeeds Hervé Renard who left his post following the early elimination of Morocco from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) by Benin in the round of 16.
The FRMF’s initial objectives have not changed for the Bosnian. Halilhodžić is called upon to qualify the Lions for the next 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He is also expected to achieve good results for the participation of the Moroccan national team in the 2021 CAN scheduled in Cameroon.
Familiar with Morocco (winner of the Botola and the African Champions League with Raja Casablanca in 1997), Vahid Halilhodžić will certainly not have enormous difficulties in succeeding in this challenge, which will allow him to exercise durably on the bench of the Atlas Lions.
