Morocco multiplies its purchases of Argentine corn by 2.3 (+133 %)

Morocco has more than doubled its purchases of Argentine corn since the beginning of the year. Imports reached 1.55 million tonnes in seven months, a spectacular 133 % increase compared with 2025.

The figures were reported this Wednesday, September 9, by Reuters, based on data from Argentina’s National Institute of Statistics (INDEC). Among the major North African buyers, Morocco is by far showing the strongest growth.

Between January and July 2026, Moroccan purchases of Argentine corn surged by 133 % to reach 1.55 million tonnes. Egypt remains ahead in volume, with 2.4 million tonnes, but its growth is limited to 48 %. Algeria also imported 2.4 million tonnes, an increase of only 10 %.

The shift confirms the diversification Morocco has pursued for several years toward South American cereals, particularly to reduce its dependence on certain traditional suppliers.

Ukraine loses ground as Argentina benefits

This shift is partly explained by the difficulties encountered by Ukraine. Russian strikes against export infrastructure in the Odesa region have severely disrupted Black Sea ports. Ukrainian exporters increasingly have to use Danube ports and land routes, while drought and extreme heat in Europe are also complicating transport.

According to Reuters, Ukrainian shipments fell by 52 % last month. At the same time, Argentine exports to North Africa increased by 45 % over the first seven months of the year, reaching 6.5 million tonnes.

Argentina is also benefiting from an exceptional harvest. Its corn production for the 2025-2026 season is estimated at 71.7 million tonnes, nearly 20 % above its previous record. The country could export 10 million tonnes on its own in August and September, compared with around 3 million usually during these two months.

For Morocco, the change is particularly spectacular: in one year, its purchases of Argentine corn more than doubled. This acceleration further strengthens the weight of South America in the kingdom’s grain supply.
