Morocco Set to Import 5 Million Tons of Cereals Amid Drought Concerns

Morocco could import up to 5 million tons of cereals this 2022-2023 season. The kingdom is pursuing its strategy of diversifying supply sources in a tense climatic context.
According to projections by the Ministry of Agriculture, Morocco could import cereals this year from "France and Argentina and to a lesser extent Brazil". In terms of quantity, the kingdom could import up to 5 million tons, according to data from the French cereal exporters’ group "Intercéréales".
"Moroccan imports of soft wheat should be between 4.5 and 5 million tons next year due to the drought," says Yann Lebeau, head of the Maghreb region at Intercéréales. The cereal volume of the 2021-2022 campaign stands at 34 million quintals, including 18.9 million quintals of soft wheat, 8.1 million quintals of durum wheat and 7 million quintals of barley.
